When I was comparing usage for some of our on-prem deployments that use UDP for SIP, bandwidth usage was comparable. Not sure that it makes a huge difference but I’ll do some more testing/comparing.
Success on both fronts. I solved my issue AND I learned something new!
tldr: We had subscriptions set to expire far too frequently (every 60 seconds), erroneously thinking that we had to do that because of NAT expiration on the firewalls at all the offices. Changing it to 3600 seconds slashed usage dramatically.
Thanks to @BlazeStudios listing out the packet sizes for the different parts of SIP communication between the phones and the PBX it became pretty clear pretty quickly what our error was. Subscriptions are bandwidth EXPENSIVE if each phone has got 12 BLF fields and you are renewing the subscription every minute.
