Polycom phones rebooting and freezing

Hi everyone,
I have a problem were my polycom phones are randomly rebooting and freezing in 2 different offices. There is no pattern and I’m not able to recreate it so far, it happens during calls and stand by, for the last 5 days not reboots, today 20 phones rebooted so far. I’ve tried flashing the phones, reset to factory, different firmwares, DHCP, static IPs, but non of those changes seem to make a difference.

This is my setup:
PBX Firmware: 6.12.65-27
PBX Firmware: 10.13.66-12

EndPoint Manager 13.0.57

  • firmware management: polycom 1.05 and 1.08
  • use upgrader bootrom for looping phones

Polycom phones: 320, 321, 330, 335, 5000, 6000, 7000
-firmwares from EPM: 3.3.5, 4.1.0, 4.1.1

This is my provisioning process:
1- connect phone to network with DHCP enabled
2- DHCP server gives IP, subnetmask, gateway, lease time, provisioning server and credentials using option 160
3- phone installs (if necessary) new bootroom from EPM, will reboot until it find application to install(if necessary)
4- phone connects to phone server (gateway)
5- using EPM assign a extention, template and model of phone.
5a-template contains either firmware 1 (1.05) or firmware 2(1.09)
6- phone installs application
7- phone finishes provisioning and it is ready to use.

This is my DHCP config file:

class “Polycom” {
match if (binary-to-ascii(16,8,":",substring(hardware,0,4)) = “1:0:4:f2”); #The binary-to-ascii func$
option routers 10.4.0.1; # default gateway and phone server
option option-160 “ftp://user:[email protected]”; #polycom
default-lease-time 15552000; # 6 months, time in seconds
max-lease-time 15552000; # 6 months, time in seconds
option domain-name “CORP”;
}

    subnet 10.4.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 {
            option broadcast-address 10.4.5.255;
            pool{
                    allow members of "Polycom";
                    range 10.4.1.0 10.4.5.254;

            }
    }

EPM Global settings:
internal IP Address: 10.4.0.1

Resync Time: 2592000 -I changed this from 86400

This is the App log from a 335 that just rebooted:

I can add the boot log if necessary it is just too long

The SIP-interop.cfg in all my models installed thought EPM show:
voIpProt.SIP.specialEvent.checkSync.alwaysReboot=“1”

The MAC-Features.cfg has:
sntp.tcpIpApp.sntp.resyncPeriod=“86400”

sorry for the long entry, any information as to why the phones are randomly rebooting is useful thanks.

you mentioned two different offices - are these offices connected to the pbx via a vpn tunnel?

No, each office has the exact same setup, running it’s own pbx and licensing, they do not interact between them at all. The only difference is that one office is running pbx 12 and the other 13. same phone models as well.

are you using vlans? what is doing dhcp?

good question, I am running the DHCP server in the centOs where the pbx is hosted. Also, I am not using any vlans in the phone network, so all phones and the phone server are in the same VLAN.
Thank you for your responses.

look at the phone ip address in the app log. it is showing a phone ip of 10.4.1.0 - this is not a valid ip -

try setting the pool range to be 10.4.1.150 to 10.4.1.199

i assume you are using your pbx as your gateway and your dhcp server as well as your ftp server?

Yes that is correct.

This are the settings in the template:

I have complete control over the pool which is 10.4.1.0 to 10.4.5.254, with a gateway of 10.4.0.1 and subnet of 255.255.0.0.
Could you help me understand why do you think the IPs could be causing the problem?

Again thank you for looking into it.

look at the app log you posted at the beginning of this thread. the phone has an ip address of 10.4.1.0 which as far as i know is not a valid ip. i looked at several app logs from various polycom phones we have here and the ip shown in the app log is always accurate.

also, the reason i suggested using only part of the pool is unless you also add ip reservations, it is never a good idea to have your pool overlap with static ip’s (like the pbx).

i can’t tell you that is exactly what is causing the issue, but i can say that the one you posted did not have a valid ip. i can’t image how the phone could even get that ip address but i will bet that because it is invalid the phone can’t navigate the network.

well the IP of the phone server is 10.4.0.1 with 255.255.0.0
…the phone’s IP is 10.4.1.0 with 255.255.0.0 and gateway of 10.4.0.1.

The phone server has a static IP, and most of the phones (300 aprox) are running dhcp with an ip received from the dhcp server, and they are functional, well with the exception of the rebooting issue, so i don’t think there is overlapping between the server and the phones. This particular phone (mine) just happened to receive the very first IP of the pool (10.4.1.0).
But I’m here willing to take suggestions and if you consider that the pool I’m using could be and issue I can change the range of the pool .

just change the start of the pool to .2 and see how thing behave. i still don’t understand how the phone could ever get a .0 address.

Your DHCP server has been instructed to hand out dynamic addresses in this range.

That’s bad, since (theoretically) you could assign a conflicting IP address to a phone for your server (10.4.1.1, which is between …1.0 and …1.254). You need to make sure that there are no static addresses anywhere in your range.

Your system managed to assign the address 10.4.1.0 to one of your phones, which is the “network” address for your network. What is likely to happen is that any traffic for any server, phone, or printer in the network is going to get responded to by one of your phones.

That’s bad.

Thank you for the responses, in this network there are only polycom phones and 1 phone server, nothing else, the IP range can be easily modified. But in this particular case the issue is not the IPs or the range, but the fact that the phones reboot randomly, the phones reboot even when they have static IPs entered directly in the phone.

The phone server is in a different octet than the DHCP range, the server has the IP 10.4.0.1, the Range starts at 10.4.1.0, and it goes up to 10.4.5.254.
There is no way the DHCP server will assign an IP like 10.4.0.5 or 10.4.0.250 or 10.4.0.1, the IPs served by the server look like 10.4.1.100, 10.4.2.5,10.4.3.0, 10.4.4.55 or 10.4.5.254, because the range starts at 10.4.1.0 and not 10.4.0.1
Thank you for the observations

True enough. If your netmask is /8 (255.0.0.0), then the 1.0 address should be reasonably valid.

In spite of that, as mistrusting as I am of VLSM, I’d set the range up to start at a “.1” address instead of a “.0”. As you pointed out, it should be fine with the right netmask, but I’m just not comfortable with it set that way.

that is new information or if you mentioned it earlier i missed it - that you have tried using static ip addresses. that rules out the dhcp server issue. was the applog you posted of a phone that you had setup with a static ip?

I did mentioned it on my first description, maybe I should’ve been more explicit.

i must say this is a tough one. and in rereading your posts it does not look there is any pattern to the reboots. are the phones PoE or are they using power supplies? the only thing other than power that i can think of that would cause the phone to reboot on its own is a vlan change. but you said you were not using vlans - right?

We had a random reboot issue (Cisco and Polycom phones, subnet size CIDR /22 = 1022 devices - including .0 addresses :slight_smile: that turned out to be an older POE switch that was failing to deliver packets as designed (stuck fan, leaking capacitors). Try putting a known good POE switch in place of the existing switch (even on the floor to test) and see if the runtime is different.

Also ensure that the logs on the UPS supplying the POE switch do not show any issues - older CyberPower units that fail one battery test “loop” in a re-test scenario, which may cause power-related outages. Of course a UPS issue would show up as ALL phones on that UPS/POE switch rebooting at the same time. Your FTP server logs may help confirm or deny this issue. Alternately attach a local power brick to a few test phones and see if they go out ; if not, dig into the UPS.
