Here’s a point for discussion: The SMS module was never encoded, so its source code exists on every PBX server. This module does not generate direct revenue itself and never has. It’s simply a layer connecting to FreePBX. Its code has likely seen minimal maintenance over the past decade, mainly for PHP version compatibility. While its non-enforced license technically restricts viewing the code, the community and staff have embraced @billsimon module, which opened SMS to many other services. Consequently, the potential reason for the current licensing (slowing propagation to other services) is no longer relevant. Could this module be moved to GitHub under an open source license like AGPLv3 or similar? This would let the community contribute without licensing concerns. Although developers can inspect PHP code to understand modules, the current restriction seems like an unnecessary burden, hindering contributions that could enhance the FreePBX ecosystem.
