Wildcard in Inbound Routes for CID?

What I am trying to do is route incoming 800# calls. I tried setting the CID entry in a new incoming route to use wildcard entries, but this doesn’t work apparently. Is there any reason why this cannot be done or is there a trick to getting it to work, if it can be done?

try _X. for the DID and _800NXXXXXX for the CID

Why would I have to put that for the DID? Shouldn’t leaving it blank perform the same function?
