Upgrade Asterisk 1.4.42 to 1.8

Yes, I have searched the forums and haven’t found a straightforward answer.

Current Setup:
System hostname Asterisk4.24
Operating system CentOS Linux 5.8
Kernel and CPU Linux 2.6.18-274.3.1.el5 on i686
Processor information Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.00GHz, 2 cores

FreePBX 2.9.05
Asterisk 1.4.42

We want to upgrade to FreePBX 2.10, but need to upgrade Asterisk 1.4.42 to 1.8.
Best answer I have seen is to uninstall 1.4.42 then install new version.

What is the best approach for a production box? Other updates have been rather easy.

Thank you.

How did you install it originally (an ISO or by hand)?

You can download the rpm, decompress it then do the ./configure, make menuselect, make, make install. That’s all the commands to build from source.

The person who installed it isn’t here anymore, so I’m not sure.

Well, you really need to know the history or have a Linux expert look at it.
