Setting the default extension after removing a user

After removing a user, his old extension disappeared and then his phone got the first available extension assigned, which is the extension of the CEO. You can imagine, that phone was ringing all the time all of a sudden.

Now we do have an extension which we assign to all numbers not in use: 999

Is there a way to configure the default extension to be assigned to new phones to be 999?

I don’t understand what is happening here. Can you describe step by step what was done, in enough detail so we can reproduce it?

how are you assigning extensions to phones?
are you using the Endpoint Manager module?
