For a new production install, do I want 1.4 or 1.6 or now 1.7? I can’t seem to find a comparison other than wikipedia stating that 1.6 is stable.

asterisk 1.8 is on beta.
asterisk 1.6.2 is stable and have a few more features than 1.4 (http://blogs.asterisk.org/2010/01/29/about-asterisk-1-6-2-release/).
The end of life of 1.4 and 1.6.2 is the same (http://www.asterisk.org/asterisk-versions).
If you need somes feature of the 1.6 branch or if you use some ISDN/PSTN hardware card, you may use 1.6.2.
