PJSIP extensions not registering after update

I’m having a strange issue since I updated my server a few days ago with registering my remote extensions. It was working with no errors in the log prior to the update. I updated it through the system updates module. Currently I’m running:
Current PBX Version: 15.0.16.76
Current System Version: 12.7.8-2008-1.sng7

I have a couple of remote extensions that are running through OpenVPN. My office subnet is 192.168.0.0/24 and the remote subnet is 192.168.3.0/24. In general SIP settings I have my local subnet set to 192.168.0.0/16.

Since the update, my “full” log is completely empty no matter if I’ve rebooted, refreshed or whatever. I don’t see anything related to the failed register in any log other than the fail2ban log. That keeps giving me strange errors:

The remote extension IP is 192.168.3.170 and somehow it’s showing my remoteaddress of my public IP instead of the internal VPN IP (I filtered it 172.250.–.–. Another Strange thing is it’s showing some of my other internal extensions getting ChallengeResponseFailed to this extension as well, which makes no sense to me cause those extensions are registered fine. 192.168.0.40-49 are all other registered internal extensions.

After my reboot I also started getting errors like this from extensions that seem to be working fine:

Looks like this is a bigger issue than I originally thought. It’s not just my remote extensions, but all my PJSIP extensions are failing to register. I’ve checked and rechecked my passwords and the ports being used. I set “pjsip set logger on” and tried to auth and here’s the process that’s happening:

I’ve been running this server for about 10 years now (with migrations to new hardware) so I’m not sure if there may be some old stuff that may be causing issues with the most recent updates.

You doing to need to do an update to get the logs back. It seems it was fixed.
Also, you can whitelist those IP addresses in fail2ban

I did find the workaround to get the logs back and it’s not looking good. I do have those IP’s in the fail2ban whitelist. I’m now seeing tons of errors like this in the full log for extensions that are registered and working:

Ok, so I’m narrowing it down to an issue with PJSIP extensions. The previously registered internal extensions are now failing registration and I’ve gone so far as to create a whole new extension and register with a softphone. No matter what I do it fails, but if I change the extension from pjsip to chan_sip, registration works if after I also change the connection port of the softphone to 5062. Pjsip listening port is set to 5060.

Pjsip is listening on port 5060 and chan_sip is using 5062.

Yes. This setup was completely working up until the last update.

The log paste you put up does not show anything… At this point someone would of said to turn on logger and paste that here, but I think that is too messy.

So I say turn on sngrep (excecute “sngrep” from the command line) and watch the registration action from there. It will give you a better look at what is going on.

But you did show a snip of 401 unauthorized. Bad password?

Yes, all I see is 401 replies. I know I’m typing the password correctly. I even created a new extension and setup a softphone. Made the password super easy to avoid typos and still getting this error.

So this affecting all remote extensions, or just those on the VPN?

It started out as only the ones on the VPN, but now it’s affecting even the ones internally.

I did updates and am now fully updated. I didn’t try Asterisk ver switch, but just went from 16->17 with no change.

Just tried v13 certified with no luck either.

I’ve checked and rechecked. Changed them and changed them back. Nothing seems to work. I did come across another strange thing. I added zoiper soft phone app on my cell phone and I can register one extension but not any others. I tried registering that same extension on a yealink and and a Cisco ATA but those error 401.

I’m starting to think I have to restore the pbx been a backup.

That behavior sounds awfully like mis-configured NAT forwarding rules on your firewall. Or an ALG trying to be clever.

I was thinking the same thing. There’s no ALG on PFsense which I’m using. I went so far as to fully remove it from the loop and put just a regular router with DMZ pointed to the pbx (Just temporarily, I know it’s not a good idea). In my sip settings in the PBX I have192.168.0.0/16 for local networks which will cover my internal and VPN routes. From my external it’s showing the correct public IP.

I tried that too. I posted all that I get from it above… Which isn’t much. FYI That’s only for one of the extensions. I’m getting dozens of that for every extension.
