Phones for Physically Limited Users

I have a user that has a physical limitation/physical disability in that they have limited flexibility in their hands, so they need a phone that lays flat on the desk instead of the way most phones present the keyboard/dialpad upright at about 60° to the desk (just a little less than perpendicular).

He has used the Yealink VP530 in the past. If the support on the back is removed (or not installed) then the phone is designed to lay flat without wobbling when dialed. All other phones I’ve been able to find so far cannot lay flat and will wobble a lot if you try to dial on them with the back support removed.

Unfortunately, the VP530 is horribly past end-of-life (as of 11/30/2015).

Does anyone out there know of a FreePBX compatible phone that can lie flat on the desk? The real requirement is that the user can punch straight down on the keys maybe with a pencil or stick. If the phone is oriented more vertically, he ends up punching the phone out of reach or off the desk.

such a phone is any ‘wall phone’ rotated 90 degrees. Many phones come with ‘wall phone’ adapters. Or a softphone on a tablet

The Polycom VVX series (this is a VVX411) is not too bad in this regard.

Most keys won’t rock the phone, no matter how hard they are pressed. For the top line keys or the bottom row of numbers, pressure five times greater than what is needed to activate the button will cause the phone to tip. You have to be a little careful with volume up/down and keep the pressure less than about three times what’s needed to perform the function.

Otherwise, perhaps an iPad or Android tablet running a SIP app?

Or, controlling a SIP app by voice?

What is wrong with the Yealink? It’s just a typical siphone and should work just fine even with FreePBX 17. It’s not like Yealink reaches out from China or wherever they are and bricks the phone just because it’s older. Hell I’m willing to bet your car is older than the phone.

I use the Linphone VoIP app on my Pixel 6a running Android 14.

I’ve had to deal with these accomodation requests before and they can turn very political. If he likes the Yealink you would be wise to not upset the applecart and upgrade his phone “just because”

Hmm. . . . reference

but given that, your point is ?

You can use the VP59 or any of the T5x phones as they are all pretty much the same as the VP530. They sit flat(ish) on the desk and the screen flips up just like the VP530.

While there are those suggesting regular IP phones like a VVX411, etc that can lay flat on a desk. The key issue is the screen also being flat and not being seen properly from someone sitting at a desk.

Thanks for the suggestion.

If others are reading this, especially if you are physically limited, I would love to hear any recommendations you might have.

Seems like there should be a thread that doesn’t close after 30 days that lists handsets recommended by/for physically limited users.

You can request the moderators to re-open a thread, if you have a valid addition. Also note that the 30 days is from the last contribution, not from the start of the thread.
