On premise hardware, build or buy a pre built

Hello,

I currently use an online PBX service and my set ups are temporary and i have spent alot of money with that other PBX provider to do mostly internal calls via extension. I do not do long term install or sales of equipment. I currently have FreePBX hosted on a cloud server to test and play around with be for i make purchase hardware. my question is would you build out your own 1-2u server or would you but a premade one from sangoma/clearlyip? 100-200 extensions will be used on this device and it will sit in a data center away from the light of day.

What would be your upfront and monthly cost of yor colo’ed service compared with your current cloud service?
Most good cloud servers can be dynamically dimensioned.

We still have space in the data center, so there’s no real cost there. the could service i am using i can upgrade the service but “Downgrading is currently not supported”. There may be months on end that my PBX may not be used, that’s why i’m looking at hardware, if i spend 2-3k on hardware it will last 5+ year and my ROI would be less then 1 year

My choice, at Digital Ocean you can size your machine down to $8 per month for an intel nvme droplet.

crank it up to 4cpus 8gb memory for $64 when you need it , snapshots are cheap, floating IP’s and storage well priced.

You can script all that with their doctl API

Gotcha, I’ll have to look into them. Any issues when doing that and downsizing the drive side from 240 gb to 35 with any loss of data or issues? With 8gb and 4 cpus how many extensions/concurrent calls will that handle?

Vultr is another good option, atleast I’ve been running several FreePBX instances with them for a couple of years now without any problems.

I don’t think you can downsize the harddrive at DO, but 35 gb is effing hue for storage and external strage is $10. per 100gb

8gb and 4cpus can handle hundreds oif calls but traditionally 300 extensions will only need 10% usage until you get an earthquake

That’s where i am hosted now but you are not able to downgrade, only upgrade

I normally have about 100-125 CC at a time, i was going to send you a DM to explain more since i dont put my business out there but it seems like you can not do that on this platform.

doctl completion

Yes Vultr is good and not too expensive. I’m using two servers right now.
