Hot Desking Confusion

I’ve searched the forums, and google, and I’m getting conflicting information. For hot desking, is it based on the PBX capabilities, or the phone capabilities? I know that FPBX will do it, but I’ve seen that it’s based on what phones you have, and what PBX settings are configured. Which is true, will any phone hot desk as long as the pbx is configured for it, or does the handset make a difference in the ability to do so? Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated.
