Does SMS only work if you're trunking through Sipstation?

I’m thinking of coming to FreePBX but I was reading some documentation about SMS and it seemed like(unless I misinterpreted it) SMS is only available if you’re using Sipstation which from what I gather is just a SIP trunk provider.

Is this accurate? Sipstation seems much more expensive than the likes of Voip.ms, Telnyx, etc… I’d hate to be boxed in. Can someone shine light on this please?

You can also use VoIP Innovations, or Clearly IP for native support. There is also an open source SMS connector module for a few other providers created by @billsimon

I don’t use it so I can’t speak to the service. Pricing seems expensive.
