Calls Intermittently Dropped Transferring to Ring Group

Very intermittently, I get reports of incoming calls being dropped when they are transferred to a ring group. This has happened for several months, but is so random and incredibly infrequent (I’ll get maybe one report a month of it happening) that I haven’t dedicated much time to tracking down what’s causing it. I’ve been incredibly busy since basically last year and it seems like no matter how hard I try or how many hours I put in, I just can’t catch up… get one task close to being done and three more are thrown at me. :frowning: Not an excuse, but I really haven’t had the time or patience to chase random ghosts that happen once every blue moon & which could be caused by user error or a crappy cell connection. Learned yesterday that the operators haven’t been reporting it every time because it’s too much trouble to record the date/time/number… :man_facepalming:

Just got off the phone with a customer that had this happen to him. His experience was that our operator greeted him & said that she would transfer him, he got our hold music for a very brief period of time, and the call simply disconnected. There was no background noise, overhead music, ringing - nothing between our hold music and the drop. He called back less than a minute later and the same thing happened at the same point in the progression of the call. (I am fortunate he remembered in such detail; I was given information on the call drops yesterday & this happened on the 13th! :man_facepalming: ) This happening twice in quick succession confirms that there is some kind of issue going on rather than the fluke glitch I’ve assumed it was.

The call recordings of this happening support what our operators & the customer reported. In the past, we’ve had something similar when a phone had a dirty hangup switch - essentially, picking up the receiver would make the phone go off-hook - on-hook - off-hook in rapid succession. This would pick up and immediately hang up on the call just by picking up the handset. This does not appear to be the case here as the ring group does not appear to have rang. (The customer told me he heard no ringing, the timing of the call disappearing happened during the same second as the transfer, and the call recording of the ring group leg shows 0:00 for length.) Unfortunately, this was during the time our video surveillance had crashed, so I cannot check the video to see if any of the people in this ring group were nearby. Shortly after this was first reported months ago, it was a recent report & the employees in the ring group said their phones never rang.

Opened a ticket open with our provider, not really expecting them to show anything given that both drops happened the instant the call hit the ring group - the longer I live, the less credibility I lend to coincidences like this. :laughing: As expected, they found the calls and the BYE came from our end both times.

I’ve pored over both the CDR reports in the GUI & full system log at the time, trying to figure out what happened, but have been unable to find anything to indicate any kind of problem. All hangup causes are either 16 (normal call clearing) or 26 (call answered elsewhere) on both calls.

It’s difficult for me to believe that there’s a configuration problem with the extensions or ring groups as the VAST majority of calls are handled exactly as expected & are processed perfectly. I’ve gone over the ring groups multiple times & see nothing amiss - certainly nothing that would cause a call to drop rather than start ringing the phones in it.

Watching the operators transfer calls, they press transfer and hit the BLF key for the ring group. Not really much to screw up there, but I don’t have any camera focused on the phones to monitor what’s going on. They absolutely get super-busy from time to time & I have no problem in thinking that they might possibly be pressing something inadvertently. I’ve considered setting up a box to collect syslog activity from the operator & departmental ring group phones, but haven’t done this before; don’t know the right settings to use in the phones & expect the output to be overwhelming. When the most recent customer was dropped twice, the same operator took both calls & says she was very careful when transferring the call the second time, so I question if this would yield anything substantive.

We’ve had this PBX since 2019 & this only started maybe 8-10 months ago with no major changes around that time. The operators say that they don’t think it’s ever happened when sending a call to a regular extension - only to departmental ring groups. It’s so incredibly intermittent that troubleshooting is going to be great fun… make a change & wait a month or more to see if the problem recurs. :worried:

Pretty much all our phones are Polycom model VVX410 configured to do blind transfers by default. (We do have a very few VVX500 phones, but none in either the operator group or departmental ring groups.) All operator phones have a single 40-line expansion module. Server is on version 10.13.66-22. (Yes, version 13 :expressionless: - we’re stuck on it if we want to keep the high availability that was sold to us, which we absolutely do as it’s saved us several times despite the periodic headaches it causes. :slight_smile: ) The updates module inside the System Admin page reports that the server is up to date & no updates are needed.

At this point, I’m kind of at a loss of how to proceed investigating the issue and would appreciate advice on how to isolate what’s going on. Setting up a system to collect logs from the phones and :crossed_fingers: is about the only thing I’ve got left at this point… :disappointed_face: I’m planning to sanitize the logs & CDRs for these calls to remove names/numbers & post them in a follow-up message in case someone else can see something I’ve missed.

I’d like to make a suggestion for modification to the instructions in the support article. It says to use sed if you wish to redact information, which works for most instances. IMO, there should be a note after this to look for base64 encoded strings (ending with ‘==’) that also contain information - in my case, customer caller ID & full phone number - that you might not want exposed to the world.

You would need to provide a call trace with SIP debug enabled.

Also, consider migrating to PJSIP.

What is it about those lines that indicates a codec mismatch? (Asking because I’m both trying to learn & so that I can grep logs to get a true idea of how frequent this is happening.) More questions illustrating my stupidity - how do I go about enabling SIP debugging? Given how infrequently this is reported, I’m concerned about filling a file system leaving it run long-term; is this a legitimate concern?

When we migrated from CCM to PBXact, we kept the Cisco 7960 phones & just flashed them to SIP. Our people love them up until an update to our edge router killed some of the basic functionality. Since we couldn’t go back (thanks a lot Cisco :enraged_face: ), I couldn’t find a solution, and the SCCP manager module wouldn’t work with them, I threw money at the problem and replaced them all with the Polycoms. Reason I bring this up is because the Cisco phones absolutely 100% refused to work with PJSIP. Do the Polycoms, which are a lot newer & more popular phone that were designed to be SIP phones rather than a kludgy firmware developed after the fact, have any trouble with it? Would I need to migrate all our phones or would doing only the operator & one department’s phones be sufficient, so I could monitor to see if it resolves the issue or not?

AFAIK, they work well with PJSIP, I am no big Polycom fan because of their labyrinthine provisioning.

PJSIP and Chan_SIP run on different ports, so you can migrate one by one.

Before your latest reply, I was searching online trying to wrap my brain around this problem. I found many references to codec mismatches in FreePBX, but I still do not understand the source of the issue, especially since it’s happening so intermittently, only on transfers, and spontaneously began with nothing having been changed on the phones or system to my knowledge.

A call comes in and the operator picks it up - both parties can hear each other, so the PBX must be doing whatever transcoding is necessary (if any) behind the scenes. When the operator transfers a call to a ring group, the operator phone is basically calling that ring group and then connecting the already-established call to it. The operators have no problem calling the ring group as a new call - it’s only when connecting the established call to the ring group that there’s an infrequent issue. If it were a codec problem, wouldn’t it be an every-call problem, basically disabling the ring group, instead of only happening a few times a month? My knowledge of codecs comes mainly from the AV world, using ffmpeg to transcode audio and video into whatever formats the device I’m putting them on wants. (Exceptionally silly of the TV manufacturers to not standardize to support a given set of codecs, but whatever… I now have a library of scripts to transcode the movies I own to a format that will play on any TV in my home. :roll_eyes: ) What am I missing in my understanding???

One post I found on reddit says to look for a hyphen outside of the diagonal line in the translation matrix of asterisk to find the missing codec. I did this & there do not appear to be any missing:

Enabled sip debugging in asterisk and almost immediately turned it off again - the log file would’ve filled the file system in less than 4 hours. I opened a new thread for this sub-topic as it’s about a separate, though related, issue. Was thinking that might help others if indexed with a more accurate title.

I’ve not tried migrating to pjsip yet, but plan to try doing so on a few phones. Remember fighting with pjsip for several days when first setting up our phones and was never able to get it to work. Tried chan_sip and things started working. Big difference between then & now is the endpoints - Polycom instead of Cisco phones. Unfortunately, I do not remember enough details to be of use should problems arise now. :confounded_face:

Is a bridge being created and immediately destroyed always an indication of a dropped transferred call?

Reason I ask is that I wrote a script to look at the log files & this seems to be a LOT more prevalent than what my users seem to be experiencing. (7-24 times a day each day we’ve been open this month.) It’s difficult for me to believe that this many calls are being dropped & people aren’t screaming about it…

1-line script I worked out to show info about each instance of a bridge being created / destroyed at the same time stamp:

grep "'simple_bridge' basic-bridge" /var/log/asterisk/full-$1 | grep Enterprise-SIP | grep [joined][left] | cut -c 2-20 | sort | uniq -cd | cut -c 9- | while read line; do grep "$line" /var/log/asterisk/full-$1 |grep "'simple_bridge' basic-bridge"; done

There does not seem to be any particular extension that this is happening with (which is why I put the while loop in there) - divide the number of lines output by 4 to get the number of instances.

I’m hopeful that a solution has been found, which is a good thing given the lack of responses. Discovered an old thread on here in which someone suggested disabling ‘Skip Busy Agent’ in the ring group configuration. I did that & while the 1-line log analysis I posted nearly a month ago still shows several bridges being set up & immediate destroyed throughout the day, the complaints of dropped calls from our operators have plummeted. No idea what else could trigger that in the log files, but happy the users seem to be having fewer problems with such a simple change. :slight_smile:
