Busy Inbound Call

I updated the external router public address and performed the SIP Settings > NAT Settings >External Address (Detect Network Settings). The new IP address is now in the External Address, however, I now have odd behaviors with the system.

Issue:

  1. New Inbound calls are busy when calling to the FreePBX server
  2. I can make calls leaving the FreePBX server with Zulu from a computer off the network
  3. If I make a change to the FreePBX server and Apply settings, CALLS WORK
  4. After 5 minutes, calls stop working again

Tried:
I have tried to disable the firewall, same issue occurs
I have tried to allow Anonymous Inbound SIP Calls, same issue occurs
I check and applied updates, same issue occurs

I do not think this is related to the Firewall or Sip Settings. I find that the server loses its ability to receive calls after 5ish minutes. Once I hit submit within SIP Settings (no changes made) and Apply the issue is gone for 5 minutes.

Any assistance troubleshooting this is appreciated.

Thank you

Sounds like a dynamic firewall or NAT rule in the router is timing out…

If you can’t fix it on the router, setting short register timers and high quailify frequencies may keep the rule refreshed.

Thank you for the response.
Does FreePBX re-apply the firewall each time “Apply Config” is pressed? I tried to disable the firewall completely, I still get the same behavior.

I find that regardless of any changes made in the console, if I hit “Apply Config” the system will work properly for a few minutes. I do not understand what is happeneing to allow the system to work, then stop after a few minutes.

Thanks

I’m addressing this from an Asterisk point of view, and assuming the problem is in the router not in the FreePBX machine. That’s where most such problems lie.

No timeout changes were made to the router, just updating the old IP with the new IP.

Are there any settings I should look for? I agree that there seems to be a timeout somewhere. I find it interesting that if I apply any settings to the PBX, the system works for a short time. Can you suggest any specific logs I should look into?

This is what I see in the Asterisk Log Files “full” log before it stops working:

vital-inbound is my inbound trunk, however, I did not make any modifications to that entry.

That will, with a typical configuration result in a REGISTER request being sent, which as an outbound request, is likely to result in a router generating new port forwarding and firewall pass through rules. The normal work rounds for routers timing out involve using register and qualify to ensure that outbound requests are sufficiently frequent, that router rules don’t time out.

Why did you need to do this?

The ISP requested the office to change their IP addresses. Because of that, I needed to make modifications to the PBX.

I installed a second FreePBX yesterday and configured the trunk with a pjsip connection to the provider. The trunk remained active, I did not receive a busy signal like the original PBX server. That said, I am going to try and reconfigure the orignal server’s trunk lines. The lines are configured as sip, not pjsip.

I believe I have it working now. It seems that the original inbound “chan_sip” trunk was timing out. I configured a new “pjsip” inbound trunk and have been able to successfully test inbound calls.

I will continue testing this morning and close the case this afternoon if all seems to remain working.
