You do not need VPN to connect remote / external phones to your FreePBX. Find the IP of the remote phone, whitelist the IP / port in the firewall(s) and it should register.
Does you phone have VPN capability? if so follow the instructions here:

@fleex2017 Do you want to set up OpenVPN connections from your employee homes to your local network? VOIP can work with that as well, and if you want your people to have access to the things in your network, this might be a better solution.
I have used OpenVPN for +10 years to have phones away from the office. Avoids NAT issues, and allows for networking.
My favorite equipment these days for OpenVPN are the EdgeRouter products from Ubiquiti. Our main offices are using the EdgeRouter Lite, and the clients are the little EdgeRouter minis.
