On my sip phone, I can set a BLF key to *98101 and it shows the lamp properly when there is a voicemail. However, if I set the BLF key to *97, it never shows a lamp.
Can FreePBX be set to send the BLF lamp to *97 like it does *98101?

I don’t think asterisk generates hints for *97. Most phones already have a Message Waiting Indicator for voicemails so you shouldn’t need a BLF.
Ok, I think you are right. In the phone syslog, I see that it is attempting to subscribe *97 and is receiving 401 Unauthorized back. However, the voicemail icon on the screen is accurate with the number of voicemails.
