SSH Connection timed out

Sometimes when I SSH to my FreePBX box I forget to put root@ before the IP address. I invariably enter the correct password for root@ but it’s trying to log me in as non-existant user myname@.

After three failures, FreePBX blocks additional ssh attempts by saying “connection timed out” for a period of time.

What’s the setup that’s causing this? I think I’d like to modify it to allow 3 more attempts, but more importantly be interested in adding this to other linux boxes, especially those that are exposed to the internet that aren’t using keys.

That is the fail2ban system.
