retrieve_conf failed

Reload failed because retrieve_conf encountered an error: 127

this was while updating modules on a routine basis from 2.4.x.x to 2.4.x.x Everything seemed to go OK until clicking the orange bar when it failed with error 127. This system has been running and doing updates for several weeks without issue. Permissions/ownership on all files seems just fine.

Is there a known fix?

Look at this post, where different retrieve_conf failures are listed - maybe you can find something similar.

You can also run retrieve_conf --debug and post the result with error here without it it’s hard to tell where your problem might be.
