POLL: Do You Use The Custom-Contexts Module from the FreePBX Add-Ons Repository?

kenn10,

if custom_context were significantly overhauled in 2.8, with the required changes to the new schema and some serious simplification in the GUI which is another reason it has been kept away, then we might be in a position to bring it into the core.

As far as v3, first of all, it will support both FreeSWITCH and Asterisk. (It does already, both drivers being finished right now so we can get a general user preview release out shortly).

So it will be your choice whether you use FS or Asterisk and may depend on the feature set that is offered on one vs. the other as there will certainly be modules that evolve that do not apply to both.

However, v3 is architect-ed and designed from the ground up to handle different contexts so it should evolve with this in its core. The challenge will be for v3 to catchup to v2 in features and functionality. Don’t forget, v2 has a 4+year head start over v3. So a lot is going to depend on the enthusiasm of the development community to start working on v3 modules and help get it there. I’ve got some ideas to try and motivate that but we will have to see.

In the meantime, as promised back when we announced v3, v2 will not just “stop” because v3 is out. It will continue to be maintained and evolved until the point that we have a critical mass of functionality in v3 and can begin to draw up some migration plans for customers. That is a ways away, guaranteed.
