It most certainly does. Whether or not a carrier allows it is completely different. North America has had CNAM display since I was a kid in the 80’s.
There is also the issue of the receiving carriers not honoring the presented CNAM and they will do a lookup in the LIDB for the name. No name found, no name presented.
In other words, there could be various reasons the presented CNAM doesn’t make it to the other side.
I’m not sure that’s true either. According to my research BT, Sky, Virgin, TalkTalk, EE and PlusNet all support CallerID Name for their landline services. None of their mobile services provide CallerID Name services. It seems no mobile carrier provides it.
The catch with the ones that do support it is, like I posted previously, they do not honor what is presented by the caller. They look it up in a LIDB and if it is present in the LIDB they will present it to the caller. It also appears, much like it is here, that it is a service that needs to be activated to use.
So based on what I’ve found, yes the UK does support CallerID Name over SS7/TDM but it’s limited to the carriers that support it and it doesn’t seem to be an automatic service feature.
