Migrating 400+ Digium Phones From FreePBX15 Digium Phones Module to FreePBX17 EPM

So today I learned from past posts that you can’t run both Digium Phones module and EPM at the same time on FreePBX15. We have over 400 phones across 39 locations and 5 states that we need to physically touch to factory reset and migrate over to EPM, which is going to take us at least 8+ weeks to get all of those done. The only way I see this being possible is having our current production FreePBX15 phone server up and running, then migrating the phones one by one to our new FreePBX17 phone server(also running in production).

I was looking for a detailed guide on how to have 2 FreePBX servers running simultaniously, but everything I find seems pretty out of date or not very detailed. For example, if we did this

  • Which server would the voice mails be saved on? The one where the extension in question resides?
  • Would “precense” work between all the extensions on both servers?
  • Looks like this can be done via IAX and/or PJSIP trunk? Why pick one over the other?
  • Would DPMA have a way to talk between to the 2 servers? Would it need to?
  • I’m assuming I would just set up Dial Plans on the FreePBX server to go over to the FreePBX15 server for outbound calling over our SIP trunks on that server?
  • Would all of the extensions need to be configured on both servers right out of the gate? How will it know whether it needs to dial locally or over the IAX / PJSIP trunk to connect internal calls?
