Installing asterisk 1.4.22 or 1.6 and freepbx 2.5.1 on ubuntu server

Has anyone had any success installing asterisk and freepbx on a ubuntu 6.0 (32bit) or ubuntu 8.04 (64bit) server? We are using centos 5.2 and having no luck.

Note that initially Robert installs asterisk via:
apt-get install asterisk
but a fairly old version of asterisk (version 1.2.7.1) was downloaded so
he describes then using subversion to download the latest 1.2 version of
asterisk. Asterisk also comes in a 1.4 version, which I understand freepbx
is also now compatible with. I got the 1.2.13 version of asterisk via ‘apt-get install asterisk’ (back in July 08), which I am happy with.

If the asterisk installation is via subversion rather than via apt-get, you have to deal with ‘issues’ such as the need to:
addgroup asterisk
