In my lab I generally setup ESX boxes with the OS on a tiny 32GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit thumb drive. This leaves the entire HD for data. Is there any benefit to installing FreePBX in this manner? Then again, it is even possible OR would it make things more difficult?

I’d say you are just adding work. You’re “leaving the whole HD for data.” Unless you’re using a miniscule hard drive, is the percentage you’re gaining even worth the problem?

ESX is also another animal. It is designed to run from memory so it only reads from flash at startup. Red Hat Linux Enterprise is not.
