If possible I would like to hook up a panasonic TDE pbx to an asterisk system so calls can go between each other.
The only idea I had how to to it would be to set up SIP trunks on either side and route the calls that way. Would that work?

It should work, as long as your Panasonic PBX has SIP trunking capabilities enabled available and licensed.
Not only should it work, we’ve covered the steps to do it here in the forums several times.
