FreePBX Visual Directory?

I am currently using FreePBX 13.0.194.2 and I am having trouble understanding directories. I am new to FreePBX and am unfamiliar with Active Directories/LDAP.

I have customers who want a visual directory to scroll through and then make a selection to call that user. I understand in Free PBX there seems to be a Directory IVR where you can dial by name to find that user, but this isn’t quite what we had in mind.

Is there a simple way to implement a visual directory/phone book or is it best to forget this idea?

Thank you!

Curious on this as well. I have searched the forums and doesn’t seem like there is a clear answer on this topic on making visual directory within the phone itself.

Part of that is because the process for each phone is slightly different. Every manufacturer implements a different method for creating a Visual Directory on their phones.

In Lightweight Directory Access Protocol and Active Directory use the term “directory” slightly differently than the Directory module in the Asterisk system.

Based on the requirements of your phone, you can create the data your phone needs (typically a web page or an XML file) from the Caller ID directory, LDAP, or AD, or all of the above. It’s a “simple” matter of picking the data you want out of each of these incompatible data sources and using the features of the phone to get the dialing directory you want to display.
