Why do we need to make our server a static ip address
Not a freepbx thing, more a general linux thing.
is your server benind a router?
Linux can, quite happily, be a DHCP client, however, it is not normal practice to given servers dynamic addresses. If they can actually change, things tend to break around the time of the change. You are also, typically, going to want to add port forwarding rules to a NAT router.
