Distinctive ringing for extenson vs external calls

So I have read a lot of posts about this and I gather the ring you hear is determined by the phone and not the PBX? I am using grandstream GXP2170 phones and I and apparently a lot of people are asking the same question. How can I make internal extension to extension calls sound different than external calls.

I have successfully used the caller ID match option in the phones programming to match an extension number and play a distinctive ring. The issue here is there are only 10 slots for caller ID’s not to mention I have to login to every phone and enter every other extension to configure this option.

Am I missing something? Isn’t there a way in the PBX to just say if its an internal call use ring type 2 and all other calls use ring type 1? This shouldn’t require a PHD in dialplan programming.

I also tried playing with the advanced settings with the alert but it didn’t seems to make a difference, atleast not with Grandstream gxp2170’s.

Hi @dvsatech. You’re on the right track with the alert info setting in the advanced settings of Freepbx. I would set the ‘Internal Alert Info’ setting to have the text ‘internal’, and then within your phones you’ll need to change the same ‘caller ID match option’ you were adjusting earlier to instead be ‘internal’, then all internal calls should use the associated ringtone.

From the GS documentation on the 2170:
