Difference between sip_general_custom and Asterisk Sip settings

After a crash I reinstalled on a different machine, which is NAT-ted. So I specified in sip_general_custom.conf:
externip=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
localnet=192.168.0.0/255.255.0.0 (a q&d hack)
bindport=5060x

Than I discovered Asterisk Sip settings (2.8.0.1). Installed it removed sip_general_custom.conf and restarted;
none of my SIP phones was able to ‘logon’ to the system.

After restoring sip_general_custom.conf;
all works fine.

What makes the override necessary??

MORE INFO
I installed and opened the form; obviously got the errormessage; “Settings in /etc/asterisk/sip_general_custom.conf may override these. Those settings should be removed.”

Entries in the form;
External IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
and after adding a local network field the actually used networks;
Local Networks 192.168.45.0 255.255.255.0
192.168.30.0 255.255.255.0
