Dial Internal Extension from IVR - No Ringing Generated for Calling Party

Hopefully this is a really quick one and I’d be grateful for any advice.
I’ve just installed TrixBox 1.2 and set up an IVR. I have put into the general settings of FreePBX the “r” parameter to generate ringing.
When an external caller (ISDN) dials an extension directly from the IVR, no ringing is heard on their end. This is naturally disconcerting as it seems like nothing is happening.
Ringing is heard when dialing internal extensions but I suspect that this is generated locally on our equipment rather than by asterisk.
Can anyone offer any advice on how to get asterisk to generate this ringing (without a custom app and Playtones(ring) preferably!).
