VoIPServer*CLI>

need help regarding the above post as i am not able to connect outgoing calls, however i am able to connect on internal extensions, everything is working fine except the outgoing calls

The call is being rejected by the provider, they can probably tell you why. It may be due to the fact that you’re attempting to terminate a call with invalid CallerID.

the call get gets connected through xlite with the credentials provided by the service provider
it is only through freepbx the calls are not connecting, also we do have a valid caller ID

it seems that the call does not reach the service provider when attempting through freepbx

Please post logs via pastebin.freepbx.org

Like Lorne has mentioned, it seems like you don’t have a valid outgoing CallerID.

Please enable SIP debug [1] in the Asterisk console, place a call, upload the output to pastebin and post the link here.

[1] Enable debugging

freepbx*CLI> sip set debug on

You are missing the timestamps, which typically means you screen scraped a console, rather than using the log file, as the debugging guidelines suggest. That means I can’ tell how long it took to get the 408.

I’m not completely sure whether this is a locally faked 408. A contraindication is that the ACK seems to have been sent, but I think a genuine remote 408 would have had a to tag and would have had the rport value filled in. I think I’d also expect 100 Trying before a remote 408. Assuming it is local, the remote system didn’t successfully get a response back, or never received the request.

The Contact header in the request is definitely broken, as it is giving the private address, as is the media address in the SDP, even though the request is being sent to a public address. It looks as though you haven’t set up external address in your (deprecated) chan_sip configuration. NB the nat= option is for working round problems in the remote NAT implementation. The real options for Asterisk behind NAT are the external address and the list of local networks.

See Asterisk SIP Settings User Guide - PBX GUI - Documentation onwards.

Hi David,

Thanks for the response.

actually the freepbx is working fine behind Sophos Firewall (all incoming and outgoing calls are connecting without any issue)

only the problem is when i put the freepbx server behind PfSense firewall (which has been implemented newly) internal calls are connecting fine, external calls not connecting.

aslo when i configure the Xlite with the Service providers credentials the calls get connected without any issue.

I guess the old firewall implemented some sort of SIP application level gateway, to fix up the request. In general such gateways are more trouble than they are worth, but, maybe, in this case, it worked for you. Your SIP request is definitely failing to reflect that Asterisk is behind NAT.

As @david55 said, a private IP address in the Via header is wrong. One of 3 things is happening:

  1. Provider doesn’t support rport tag and is replying to the private address (which will of course fail).
  2. pfSense is blocking the outbound request or the incoming reply.
  3. The request is being sent to the wrong address.

In Asterisk SIP settings, confirm that External Address and Local Networks are correctly set. If you change these, after Submit and Apply Config you must restart Asterisk.

If you still have trouble, two approaches:

  1. Post a SIP trace for a successful call from X-Lite (behind the same pfSense firewall) and we can try to make Asterisk do the same thing.
  2. Post your trunk settings and VoIP-related pfSense settings and we can try to debug from basic principles.

HI Stewart,

Plz check the Sip Trace as well as the Trunk settings

They are in the wrong section. You cannot have different settings for these for each peer, with the deprecated driver, so they have to be in the general section. Setting them through the GUI (see link to documentation, above) should set them in right place.

(Although the currently supported driver does allow them to differ, this has to be done by having multiple type=transport sections, and they can’t go directly in the endpoint definition.)

This will be parsed as though it were:

qualify=3600

Also 3.6 seconds round trip time seems to be far greater than any user is going to consider acceptable.

There are the usual suspects for long since deprecated names and values, and chan_sip, as a whole, is deprecated, and will be removed in the Autumn 2023 release of Asterisk.

If this is what I think it is, it isn’t coming from the right address. Looks, like the router is trying to be an application level gateway. Turn that off! In any case there is a lot of noise here, but the signal has almost been summarised out of existence.

Hi David,

Thanks for your response.

but this settings does work fine when the freepbx is behind Sophos XG

There is a strong recommendation that you disable application level gateways (SIP ALG) in routers, when using Asterisk. Your new router seems to have one. Maybe the old one did, as well, but it was different. You definitely should configure external address and local networks in the general section, as they will be completely ignored where you have put them. Again, the GUI should do this for you if you use the right entries on the SIP Settings form.

It is possible that the old router didn’t have an ALG, but I would have expected calls to fail about 30 seconds into the call.
