Create a 3-digit * code to use as dialing long distance TN

Trying to create a *xxx code that could be used in outbound route dial patterns. I.E prefix *333 prepend 011XXXXXXXXXXXX. When trying it freepbx just answers back it cannot be completed.

Strange part is, change *xxx to just *xx (making sure that *xx is not in feature codes already) it works.

The question then is what is up with 3-digit * code to use to dial a long foreign TN?

I have one setup like this for my wife to dial Japan.
Sometimes she is redialing a number that came in showing the + sometimes not.
