Cisco 9971 Tftp update?

Hello i bought a Cisco 9971 from ebay and was really good price. It powered up and no problems i try to go through the menu to set it up with my freepbx server. But i found out unlike my other Cisco device which is a Cisco spa adapter that has a web interface this one doesn’t. Sense I’m still a little new to freepbx only started a month ago i have no clue how to program this phone. I did a lot of google searches, Read a lot of webpages into i came across a website which i lost the link to and now i can’t find it told me the steps on how to set it up i saved the steps in notepad

Setting up a local tftp server:

1 Download a tftp server program to your computer. I personally like tftpd32
2 Download some firmware for the phone from cisco.com. In my case I needed some older firware for the 7970, so I grabbed file cmterm-7970_7971-sccp.7-0-1.zip. You will want the “Firmware files only” option.
3 Using a spare network switch, configure it for DHCP.
4 Plug your computer into the switch, and allow it to obtain an IP address.
5 Configure the DHCP option 150 on the network switch to point to your PC’s IP address.
6 Start the tftp program on your PC
7 Plug in the misbehaving phone.
8 When looking in the log files of the tftp server, you should see the phone requesting files. You can see from the 8 screenshot below that it was requesting the “term70.default.load” file, and not finding it.

9 Now, unzip the firmware files you downloaded, put them in the tftp server’s root directory, and restart the tftp server
10 Power cycle the phone, and you should see it come back and request (and find) several different firmware files
11 Once it’s up and running, you should be able to put it on your production network and have it successfully upgrade to your production firmware version.

Then it told me for my phone i need to do.

Resetting Cisco 9951, 9971 IP phone
These phones have a number of reset options under the admin settings (Administrator Settings > Reset Settings > All Settings), however if your phone isn’t working, or there is an admin password, you won’t be able to access those. In that case try this:

1 Unplug the phone
2 Press the # key and plug the phone back in
3 When you see the MUTE light turn on (RED), key in the sequence 123456789*0#
4 The phone will restart

And that was all. I did all this and nothing happen. So i went into the phone and administration settings Ethernet settings and then i went into IPV4 settings and seen a setting for TFTP so i put the TFTP address of my pc where the TFTP32 program is at. Then some how i see on the Log viewer of the TFTP a lot of stuff came up also with the address and mac address of my phone. But nothing changed

here is a log of what is going on.

I’m now lost on what to do next or how to try to figure this out can someone please help me out? Thank you.

Hello this is the Tftp setup i forgot to add

you have a lot to learn. assuming that the cisco phone you purchased has the sip firmware, then simply use the epm to configure the phone, and point the phone at your pbx. the pbx has a tftp server (be sure to allow it through the firewall). the epm will build the appropriate config and the phone should pull the config from the pbx. from the console (or putty) tail the /var/log/messages file. if you want to see more info then edit /etc/xinet.d/tftp file and add a few more v’s to increase the verbosity and restart the tftp service (service xinetd restart). this should put you on the right track.

Hello bkslaes i went over what i was doing and reading everything again. Also read another site i was doing something wrong. What i was wrong and missing was that in face it did program the firmware. I didn’t wait enough time for it to program. So after sometime leaving it another i got no errors on it. But phone wasn’t registering. So i read another page on that i need to go into the freepbx and go into the folder and place the cnf.xml file and other files for the phone in the Tftp folder then reboot the phone when i did that it did register and i was able to make calls from it.

By chance do you have a list of all the files you needed on the tftp server to make it register? I have the SEPxxxx.cnf.xml, the SIP firmware load files from Cisco, and a dialplan.xml. It still just sits at phone not registered. I have errors about gd-sip.jar not found and a few other and am wondering if there is more missing than I have.

I am banging my head on this one, I have reviewed and modified my SEPMAC.cnf.xml, put the load files on my FTP server that is separate PC from my Sangoma PBXact UC25, still will not register. Do I need the TFTP services on the same device as the FreePBX server? I have it set up correctly in mt Cisco 9971 Endpoint to point to the TFTP server address ob the other PC.

Update, I was able to register the phone, receiving calls but nothing goes out, internal extension or outbound calls. Anyone know what I missed?

without logs, no, no clairvoyants here

Ok… i will read up on pulling the logs

I am not positive on what changes I made to get the 9971 to register that was different from when I started. Will see what I can do.
