I was unaware i had the beta 3.211 of free pbx
i do not intend for production use anytime soon however still
would like to use free pbx hassle free.
Should i install stable 2.210 ?
i downloaded from http://schmoozecom.com/distro-download.php
if i reinstall is there an uninstall process?
i was told this download is an rpm but the site says distro
is there a way to check?
Hi, if you downloaded an ISO file (.iso) from the URL you stated the file you downloaded should be used to INSTALL a FreePBX Distro in 32 bit or 64 bit host architectures.
So FreePBX Distro is, as its name says, a DISTRIBUTION.
What does it mean ?
It means that it is an All-In-One specialized appliance mainly made of various components glued together, at least:
- CentOS as the operative system (various versions)
- Asterisk as the PBX software (various versions)
- FreePBX at the Asterisk web based management interface (various versions)
So pay attention that FreePBX (the packet alone) is the graphical user interface for Asterisk management and FreePBX Distro is a software appliance.
When I write “various versions” I mean that software’s versions depend on the FreePBX Distro chosen (Stable versus Beta), more on the links reported below.
In other words FreePBX Distro is a full Linux based distribution, specialized and ready to run used to build up a PBX based on Asterisk and FreePBX.
You can’t really un-install a Distribution, for sure you can install it or re-install it (or a different one if you prefer) over the previous one.
All depends on what you’re trying to achieve and what are your requirements and targets.
Finally FreePBX (so the “software packet” alone) is the software packet you can (un)install on a operative system and represents the suite for Asterisk’s management through a web based graphical user interface.
The difference between the full distribution FreePBX Distro (Stable/Beta, no matters) and the FreePBX software is that the first one is an All-In-One specialized software appliance ready to be deployed that you could evaluate and use without worrying about to separately build up a similar one installing and configuring it software component by software component (Linux OS, Asterisk and FreePBX just to make a very brief and not exhaustive example).
You can read more about it here (Wikipedia) and here (FreePBX Wiki page about FreePBX Distro).
Aren’t the distro ISOs? How do you plan to “reinstall”…would be good to just live with 2.10 unless there’s something you must try in 2.11 or you want to use Asterisk 11.
Both can easily be upgraded at a later stage if you want. I am sure the distro folks have scripts for that too to automate.
I think for jeff-405 the main misunderstanding started at very high level: generally speaking let me say that if someone isn’t able to recognize at first sight the differences between FreePBX and FreePBX Distro (as I tried to explain above so briefly) there are true chances it will make big noise (in other terms: a big bang!) if he thinks that things could be really “hassle-free”.
IMHO I have a “Rule 0”: first look for, find informations/experiences, read about them, understand what I’m reading (implications for the requirements I have) and then improve myself by learning from what I’ve read (and, possibly, tested hand on).
And, just to answer you: Yes they both could be updated (or upgraded if needed) but, first of all, someone needs to understand what software it has before start touching it.
well put
agreed
I forgot to point you here: it’s about the installation process of the FreePBX Distro. Good Luck Jeff!
