I need to add the app_confbridge asterisk module to my installation. Can this be done from the FreePBX GUI or do I need to update the .conf file directly?

Assuming you have the FreePBX Distro confbridge is present. If you are running Asterisk 11.x you can go in to advanced settings and switch meetme to confbridge
