Activation?

I haven’t changed versions in 7 years or so, but I read the news just to see what’s going on.
Today I saw an alarming comment in a thread that referred to Freepbx requiring “activation”.

When did that happen?
What is the last official version that doesn’t have some activation scheme in it?

… Sad to see another great distro lost if true.

Activation is not required, it is an option which you can choose to ignore.
