Unable to connect to manager localhost:5038 (111): Connection refused

I just installed asterisk 1.8.9.3 and freepbx 2.9.0.7 on a pogoplug running debian. When logging in to freepbx for the first time I saw “asterisk error”. When hovering over the error it shows “asterisk is not running, this is a critical service”. I know that asterisk is running since I ran amportal restart. even though I had not changed anything the page showed on top “apply configuration changes”. When clicking on it I get the following message 'Unable to connect to manager localhost:5038 (111): Connection refused[FATAL] Unable to connect to Asterisk Manager from /var/lib/asterisk/bin/retrieve_conf, aborting". In manager.conf everything is default, user is admin password amp111. Same in amportal.conf. Someone on the forum posted that changing bindadr = 0.0.0.0 to bindadr = 127.0.0.1 solved the same problem for him. To me it doesn’t amke sense and it didn’t work when I tried. Other than that, the little bit I found through google didn’t help me.
