FreePBX can't connect to Asterisk

Environment:
Ubuntu 14.02 - 32 Bit
Asterisk 13.5
FreePBX 13
Chrome Browser

Asterisk compiled according to instructions provided by asterisk.org, is running on the machine with user id asterisk

FreePBX built and installed from instructions in wiki.

When I connect to the machine, the GUI comes up with the error message “Can not connect to Asterisk”

Looking at the freepbx.log, the last message is:
[2015-Aug-19 10:34:50] [CRITICAL] (admin/bootstrap.php:208) - Connection attmempt to AMI failed

The last entry in the freepbx_security.log is
[2015-08-19 10:33:00] Authentication failure for xxxxxxx from 192.168.5.xxx

192.168.5.xxx is the machine that I am trying to connect from.

Not sure where to go from here.

is Asterisk running as the same user as apache?

Yes. Both running with user asterisk.

By default asterisk uses lo not eth0 tp connect to AMI. Try 127.0.0.1

OK. The AMI was not enabled. Fixed settings in /etc/asterisk/manager.conf, and can now connect to asterisk.
